The three kinds of Black Friday freebie
- Free, no purchase.A gift bag or small gift card for the first shoppers in line, a free kids' event or photo, or a free game or app download. Rare, and worth it.
- Free with a purchase. A gift with purchase, a free item when you spend a set amount, or a free gift card with a gift card purchase. Only worth it for something already on your list.
- "Free" trials. A free month that renews at full price. Fine if you set a reminder to cancel, but not a freebie.
Where the truly free stuff usually is
- Doorbuster gifts.Some home improvement and department stores have handed out free gifts to the first customers on Black Friday morning. Check the store's ad the week before.
- Free holiday photos and events.Outdoor and toy stores have run free photos with Santa and free kids' crafts on Black Friday weekend.
- Free games. PC game stores give away free games every week, and some add extra free titles over the holidays.
- Free samples. Beauty stores hand out more samples during big sale weekends, often with any order. Brands also keep mailing samples through the holidays, and those are on the FreebieAgent homepage as they open.
Tips
- Read the fine print for "first 100 customers" and "while supplies last". Most free gifts are per store, not per chain.
- Skip anything that needs a credit card to claim something "free".
