Thanksgiving 2026 is Thursday, November 26. The big Thanksgiving freebie is a free turkey, which usually comes from a grocery store loyalty program when you spend a set amount, or from a cash-back app that refunds the turkey and sides after you buy them. Truly free help is out there too: free turkey hotlines, free printables, and free community meals for families who need one.

Free turkey: how it really works

  • Grocery loyalty programs. Many regional chains give a free turkey once you spend a set amount on your loyalty card in the weeks before Thanksgiving. The spending total is often a few hundred dollars, so it only pays off if you shop there anyway. Look for it in the store's weekly ad in early November.
  • Cash-back apps. Ibotta has run a free Thanksgiving dinner with Walmart in past years: buy the listed turkey and sides, scan the receipt, and get the full price back. You pay first, and the items can sell out.
  • Food banks and churches. Free turkeys and full food boxes for families who need them. Sign-ups usually close a week or two before Thanksgiving.

Other Thanksgiving freebies

  • Free cooking help. The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line (1-800-BUTTERBALL) answers calls and texts for free in November and December. Food brands also post free recipes and timetables.
  • Free printables.Place cards, kids' coloring pages, "thankful" cards and table games are free from craft and parenting sites.
  • Free parade. The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade is free to watch in New York or on TV, and many cities run their own free parades and turkey-themed events that morning.
  • Free food samples. Coffee, tea, snacks and baking brands keep mailing samples in November. They are in the list above and on the free food page.

Free Thanksgiving meals

If money is tight this year, a free Thanksgiving meal is easy to find. Churches, community centers, the Salvation Army and food banks serve sit-down dinners on Thanksgiving Day and hand out food boxes the week before. Call 211 to find one near you. Some restaurants and volunteer groups also deliver free meals to seniors who live alone.

Tips

  • Read the loyalty program terms: some free turkeys are a set weight or brand, and a bigger one costs extra.
  • Claim cash-back offers before you shop. Most cannot be added after the receipt is printed.
  • Skip "free turkey" ads that ask for a survey and a card number. Real ones come from stores and apps you know.
